Gareth Southgate admits he is absolutely not happy with the England fans who booed Joe Gomez during the 7-0 thrashing of Montenegro.
The Liverpool defender was involved in an altercation with Raheem Sterling on Monday at the Three Lions’s St George’s Park training base.
Gomez came on as a second-half substitute, replacing Mason Mount in the 7-0 thrashing of Montenegro, which secured England’s path to Euro 2020.
Raheem Sterling was not selected for the clash after being involved in a training ground bust-up with Gomez earlier in the week, leading to Southgate expelling him from the matchday squad.
Speaking in a post-match press conference, Southgate revealed that he was disappointed by the fans’ actions, “Joe had done nothing wrong. No England player should be booed when they wear the shirt. We’re a team. I don’t understand that.
“Him and Raheem are very close, and the team are very close, so we don’t want to see anyone treated in that way. All of the players are particularly disappointed with that.
“I’m hugely disappointed for him, but he’s got the support of all of us – the whole dressing room, totally united. And we’ll make sure we’re there for him.”

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s first England goal since June 2017 and a clincal first-half hat-trick from Harry Kane – in between Marcus Rashford’s strike – put the hosts in charge at the break.
An own goal from Aleksandar Sofranac and a late close-range finish by Tammy Abraham, his first international goal, confirmed an emphatic victory.
