Pep Guardiola, the Manchester City boss, has confirmed striker Sergio Aguero will be out for a few weeks with the thigh injury he sustained in Saturday’s win against Chelsea.

The fact has been confirmed by Guardiola in his pre-match press conference ahead of facing Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League tomorrow night.

The 31-year-old limped off late in the second half of City’s win over Chelsea on Saturday. His absence comes at a bad time for the club.

“Sergio will be bad. The feeling is it’s a muscular problem,” said Guardiola.

“But Gabriel has made one of the best starts of this season.

“If Sergio cannot play in the next games, we will see tomorrow – and I’m sorry I don’t know exactly what he has – Gabriel is our option.

“Of course Sterling can play there in that position but Gabriel is going to play there, sure.”

In the Premier League, City are in third place and a whopping nine points back on leaders Liverpool.

The 31-year-old Aguero has netted nine times for City this season. He remains one of the most deadly finishers in the game.

It’s likely Jesus will be given a prolonged run, and there will be big shoes for the Brazilian to fill.

The Blues need a point to secure a place in the knockout phase of the Champions League. A win would ensure they finish top of Group C and seeded for the draw for next round.
