Newcastle’s 2-1 victory over Bournemouth over the weekend was spoiled by the images of captain Jamaal Lascelles leaving St. James’ Park on crutches.

The defender suffered knee ligament damage during Saturday’s 2-1 win over Bournemouth. He collided with goalkeeper Martin Dubravka in the opening minutes.

With Callum Wilson bearing down on goal, a heavy touch allowed Lascelles to come across and take control of the situation.

As he ushered the ball into the hands of Martin Dubravka, the Bournemouth forward gave Lascelles a nudge, forcing him to collide with his own goalkeeper.

According to reports, he will now miss the remainder of 2019 and potentially all of January after the extent of the injury was confirmed. The Newcastle captain has been a key figure for the club, starting every Premier League match so far this season, scoring once.

After undergoing a scan, ligament damage was discovered. Now Newcastle physios expect Lascelles to be out for the next two-to-three months.

Fortunately for Newcastle and their supporters, Florian Lejeune is also back in contention after the international break after recovering from a knee injury he suffered last April.

Fabian Schar is also expected to return soon as he recovers from a knee injury of his own. The 27-year-old pulled out of the Switzerland squad as he’s missed Newcastle’s last three matches.

The team’s most recent win over the Cherries has seen Bruce’s men climb to 13th in the table. They have now picked up 15 points from their opening 12 matches.
